WHAT’S UP?

AQUACULTURE: A COMMUNITY ENDEAVOR
We’ve been hard at work developing and enhancing a fish pond. Our recent efforts were made possible by a grant from the School for International Training, the advocacy of SIT alumnae and TYoFU volunteer, Allie Stankewich, and the immense labor of a team of staff, farmworkers, and volunteers. A fish pond ensures the community has a renewable source of safe, nutritious food that supports their health and well-being. By embracing an eco-friendly design with natural filtration, native plants, and rainwater harvest, we conserve both wildlife, water, and soil. This project has allowed us to offer practical training and employment to youth and women in aquaculture, a field with significant demand in Ugandan markets.

BECOME A MONTHLY DONOR
Our monthly donors provide the nutrients we need to raise a new generation of eco-conscious farmers and community leaders. Whether you can donate $5, $10, or $200 per month, your donation makes a difference. For example, $10/month would purchase the bulk of our seeds for a year! Check out our GlobalGiving page to see what you can make possible! Once you’ve clicked donate, toggle the slider from left to right (one-time –> monthly), and set the amount.

OUR STORY: FROM THE GROUND UP!
Martin Tomusange and his family live near Kampala, Uganda. Martin’s calling is to support the next generation to thrive. Towards that goal, he founded the NGO “Thriving Youth Farmers Uganda” (TYOFU). He is also an entrepreneur, farmer, electrician, team leader, and project manager.
In 2008, Martin had a dream. He bought land with the hopes of producing nutritious, local food for his community while employing youth from the region. The recession of 2008 made it necessary for Martin to take other work to provide for his family – but onset of the pandemic was a reminder that there was no better time than the present to pursue his dream. Established in early 2021, Thriving Youth Farmers Uganda (TYoFU) aims to bolster Ugandan youth as the next generation of empowered, employed, community leaders. TYoFU supports food security, youth, gender equity, land on earth, climate resilience, and the local economy simultaneously.
The local community, comprised of Kalongero Cell, Kinziize Ward, and the broader Masulita Town Council, are excited and supportive of TYoFU. TYoFU became an NGO in 2022. To learn more about our activities and accomplishments in the past four years, and our future plans, please see our 2023 Annual Report.

We are fundraising for:
- Increased consistency of employment for youth farmers
- The infrastructure to raise poultry and livestock
- Business technology
- Other sustainable, earth-friendly infrastructure!
“That was the best $100 I’ve ever spent.”
